Henry Roukema London ON Obituary, Death

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Henry Roukema of London, Ontario, who died peacefully on January 28, 2026, with his beloved partner and best friend, Janet, by his side. Henry leaves behind a legacy of love, compassion, and service that will forever be cherished by his family, friends, colleagues, and the many lives he touched.

Henry will be profoundly missed by Janet and his three adult children, Leah, Mark, and Paul, as well as by his mother, Didy; his sisters Ruby Askes, Heather Roukema-Gritter (Roy), and Trish Turkstra (Andrew); his brothers Ray (Eppie) and Cliff (Esther); and his extended family, including his in-laws and many nieces, nephews, friends, and colleagues. He was predeceased by his father Job Roukema, his sister Nienke (Len Batterink), and several beloved family members.

A gifted and highly respected physician, Henry dedicated more than 30 years to the practice of neonatology at St. Joseph’s Hospital and London Health Sciences Centre. Through his gentle, skilled, and compassionate care, he impacted countless families during some of the most vulnerable moments of their lives. He was also a devoted teacher and mentor, shaping generations of medical professionals and serving in leadership roles such as Director of Nurseries. His commitment to excellence, kindness, and mentorship earned him the admiration and gratitude of colleagues and trainees alike.

Despite his demanding career, Henry always placed his family first. He rarely missed dinner at home, even when it meant returning to the hospital later in the evening. Outside of work, he found joy in tending his home and garden, cooking for loved ones, golfing a few holes, and travelling or cottaging with Janet, family, and friends. At his core, Henry was a nurturer — to his partner, his children, his tiny patients, their families, and everyone fortunate enough to be part of his life.

Henry’s family warmly invites those who knew him to an informal gathering to share memories and offer condolences on Sunday, February 8th, from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Sunningdale Golf Club in London. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Ronald McDonald House Southwestern Ontario or a charity of your choice.

Rest in peace, Henry Roukema. Your kindness, dedication, and love will never be forgotten.
