It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Ernest “Ernie” Fage, a respected farmer, community leader, and former Member of the Nova Scotia House of Assembly. Ernie passed away on Tuesday, January 27, 2026, at the age of 72. His passing has left a profound impact on his family, friends, and the people of Cumberland North, who remember him as a dedicated public servant and a man of integrity.
Born and raised in Hastings, Nova Scotia, Ernie was a proud graduate of the Nova Scotia Agricultural College, where he majored in chemistry. Before entering public life, Ernie and his late brother Stephen built Fage Farms, a successful dairy operation in Nappan and Hastings. The resilience, tenacity, and can-do attitude that made him a successful farmer would later define his political career, as he brought practical experience, determination, and thoughtful leadership to every role he held.
Ernie’s political career began with his election as a Progressive Conservative MLA for Cumberland North in a 1997 by-election, succeeding the late Ross Bragg. He was re-elected four more times, reflecting the strong trust his constituents had in him. During his tenure, Ernie served in numerous cabinet roles under Premiers Dr. John Hamm and Rodney MacDonald, including Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries, Minister of Economic Development, Minister of Human Resources, Minister of Energy, Minister of Natural Resources, Minister Responsible for the Public Service Commission, and Minister of Emergency Management. His leadership was marked by commitment, practicality, and a focus on the needs of the community.
Beyond politics, Ernie was deeply engaged in his community. He served as vice-president of the Nova Scotia Milk Producers Association, a member of the Nova Scotia Dairy Commission, a signatory of the National Dairy Plan, past-president of the Amherst and Area Chamber of Commerce, and an active member of both the Nova Scotia and Atlantic Chambers of Commerce. He was also involved in his church, serving on the council of Trinity St. Stephen’s United Church.
Ernie’s family — his wife Elaine and their three children — remain in the thoughts and prayers of all who knew him. His partnership with Elaine was a source of strength and love throughout his life. The Town of Amherst has lowered its flags to half-mast in his honor, reflecting the deep respect and admiration the community held for him.
Funeral arrangements have not yet been announced. The people of Nova Scotia and all who were touched by Ernie’s life mourn his passing and celebrate the enduring legacy of a man who dedicated himself to his family, his community, and his province.
